Accessibility Statement for Historical Pageants in Britan

The Redness of the Past: Historical Pageants in Britain is a major Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project. A key feature of the project is this website and it presents the main output of the project, which is the Pageants Database.

This website is designed, developed and maintained by King's Digital Lab. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

For example, this means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts;

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen;

  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard;

  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software;

  • skip to the main content when using a screen reader;

  • browse the main content without any readability issues;

  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Incorrect semantic markup
    Bold <b> and italic <i> tags used instead of strong <strong> and emphasis <em> tags so screen readers will not be able to detect. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships). These are added when using a third party application CMS editor, Wagtail, which we have no control of and cannot change. We have brought this issue up with the Wagtail team and they are looking at solutions to this issue.

Disproportionate burden

  • Images are lacking of alternative texts
    On the Pageants Database page, images do not have alternative text. This fails WCAG 2.1 AA success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). To fix this would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.

  • Input fields are lacking aria-labels
    The input fields of Dates, Number of Performers, and Total Audience Figure do not have aria-lables on the Pageants Database page. This fails WCAG 2.1 AA success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value). To fix this, changes need to be made to third party libraries, and thus would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.
